UNC Creative

Institute for the Arts and Humanities branding

Goals

The Institute for the Arts and Humanities (IAH) came to us to help them solve the problem of reaching a wider audience of faculty at UNC, raising national visibility for the work they were accomplishing and generally reflect the environment of their program. We worked with the IAH to analyze their existing materials and sketch out how to enhance and build on their existing foundation.

The two points of focus became the idea of a welcoming building, and inviting new faculty to “Join the Conversation”.

Process

We started with a type treatment and color palette for the Institute that would reflect the tone of warmth that the new identity was based around. This type treatment would always appear in tandem with the College of Arts and Sciences’ unit logo, but it would provide the IAH with a typographic identifier.

From these pieces, and the photography the IAH collected of events, featured fellows and conversations, we built web site designs, bookmarks, fundraising stationery and other event collateral. We have also continued to extend the palette across annual report and e-newsletter design.

Results

The Institute has raised its visibility through the use of consistent branding and message that reinforces their mission. The role that the IAH plays in retaining top-notch faculty has proven to be critical as universities struggle to balance innovative vision and recessed budgets. The materials that UNC Creative continues to develop with IAH makes this role clear and connects the Institute within, and outside of, the university.
