2020 Chancellor’s Holiday Greeting

Challenge

The Chancellor’s annual holiday greeting has typically been a fun holiday video sent to UNC students, alumni, faculty and staff. In 2021, with the campus in a remote learning and working environment, the University felt it was important to shift the usual format and focus on items that could 1) be safely produced and 2) bring the Carolina holiday spirit to everyone’s homes. The goal was to create a project that could be enjoyed by our usual audience, their families and anyone with a connection to Carolina.

UNC Creative proposed creating a package of holiday materials that would help “Bring Carolina home for the holidays” since many people were not able to experience the University in person during the holiday season. The materials we created included UNC-themed Zoom backgrounds (both photo and video) and a set of coloring pages. The Zoom videos feature the University’s beloved mascot, Rameses, in the cozy lounge from UNC’s Graham Memorial Hall, the coloring pages cover a wide array of design styles and feature campus-inspired scenes. A University website was created to house all these items (happyholidays.unc.edu) so everyone could access and download the files. The webpage was launched in early December with the hope that Zoom backgrounds could be used during virtual holiday gatherings and the crafts can be enjoyed all month long. This project was awarded a gold medal in the 2020 International Davey Award competition.
