Using illustrated elements from all four research areas within UNC Marine Sciences — Chemical Oceanography; Marine Biology; Ecology and Biological Oceanography; and Marine Geology and Physical Oceanography — this anniversary logo encapsulates the wide variety of research, curriculum and interests within the department. The line art style is used as a consistent way to bring several marine sciences themed elements together in a unified way, while also creating pattern and texture within the numerals. A more rounded sans serif typeface for the dates and “yrs” highlights the modern, forward-thinking virtues of the department, as well as the overall concept of openness and collaboration between the campus and the Department.
